Adaptation of river channels to a wetter or drier climate: Insights from the Lower Pilcomayo River, South America

چکیده

Climate change has a direct influence on both hydrology and floodplain vegetation of water courses, which are key players in river morphodynamics. The system response to climate is complex the effects non-linear interactions between alterations water, sediment remain incompletely understood. Which these components becomes dominant shaping channel when drier or wetter? To answer this question, we investigate cross-sectional sand-bed rivers focusing width depth, respond directly changes boundary stresses. Thanks exceptional availability long time-series daily discharge profiles, Pilcomayo River an ideal living lab for investigation. We constructed two-dimensional model using open-source state-of-the-art, structured Delft3D code. highly dynamic behaviour quick morphological adaptation allowed reducing period time covered by simulations because cross-section adapts its morphology new value within hours days, crucial modelling investigations. Calibration validation were successfully performed comparison with historical data. considered several scenarios representing current, dryer wetter climates. results show that reduces depth enlarges width. A increases but produces negligible widening. Vegetation, sparser denser climate, found control This analysis unique shows can be expected alluvial natural vegetated banks due change.

Long term effects of climate on human adaptation in the middle Gila River Valley, Arizona, America

The Hohokam, an irrigation-based society in the American South West, used the river valleys of the Salt and Gila Rivers between 500 and 1500 AD to grow their crops. Such irrigated crops are linking human agency, water sources and the general natural environment. In order to grow crops, water available through rain and river flows needs to be diverted to land where the plants are grown. With a f...

A new river flooding scheme for global climate applications: Off-line evaluation over South America

[1] Given their strong interaction with both climate and the carbon cycle, wetlands and surface waters need to be parameterized in global general circulation models. For this purpose, a new simple flooding river scheme is proposed and evaluated over South America. The flood dynamics is described through the coupling between the ISBA land surface model and the TRIP river routing model including ...

Macrobenthos of lower Zayandehrud River

To study the macrobenthos of the lower reaches of Zayandehrud River, a distance of approximately 160 km, between Birds Garden and Varzaneh Town was investigated. Hence, eight stations, based on substrate structure, were selected using Sorber and Ekman samplers and PVC tube macrobenthos of the river were collected twice each season for a full year (2003-2004). Samples were sorted out and identif...
